Student Work Permit in Canada

A work Permit allows an eligible visitor to reside and work in Canada for a limited period of time, and restrictions are usually placed on the type of employment which can be pursued.

One can apply for awork permit form outside Canada only if one has a job offer from a Canadian employer. 
Work permit is not an immigration document as it does not permit to live in Canada permanently. In order to live permanently in Canada you must qualify under an immigration category such as a skilled worker.

Student Employability in Canada

International students graduating from a program of 2 years or more in length would be eligible for a 2 year work permit after graduation. However, this is applicable if the student has studied in cities other than Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal and is also employed outside this area.

In these 3 cities, students are eligible for a 1 yearwork permit after graduation. The experience gained would provide them an opportunity to work in an international setting and at the same time allow them to broaden their horizons.

Scholarship & Assistance in Canada

There are limited scholarships available in Canada but they rarely cover thefull cost of a study program and they are not always easy to find. Scholarshipsto international students are available at some Canadian institutions forstudents with exceptional results. 

The amount awarded varies from oneinstitution to another and usually covers only part of a student's educationand living expenses. The calendar of each universityin Canada includes a complete anddetailed list of the scholarships it administers this information is usuallyavailable on school web sites as well. 

Obtaining ascholarship is verycompetitive and applications must be made directly to each university along with theapplication for admission. Community and Career Colleges do not usually awardscholarships nor do school boards or most private schools.

Student Accommodation in Canada

Dormitory

 Many schools have accommodation conveniently located on or near their campus. Rooms can vary in size and in quality, and many dormitories have shared kitchens, toilets, showers and laundry facilities. There is usually an option of having either a shared or private room, and dormitories are usually separated by gender.

In some cases, there are cafeterias and meal plans that can be included in the cost of the room. Most dormitories come furnished, and are an ideal way to become involved in campus activities and meet other students.

Home Stays

Many Canadian families welcome international students. This may be an effective way for you learn about daily life in Canada, and meet new, friendly people. Home stays also offer a more stable and secure environment for younger people coming to study in Canada.

Typically, a home stay consists of a Canadian family hosting a student in their home while the student attends classes in Canada. Meals and a private, furnished room are provided in the home, and the host family welcomes and encourages participation in family and community activities.

Student Visa for Canada

All students who want to study in Canada need to apply for a student authorization and obtain the written approval of a visa officer. To apply for an authorization you must:

• Have a valid passport
• Have a letter of acceptance from an educational institution
• Have enough money to support yourself
• Complete an application form and
• Pay a fee

Student authorization: A student authorization is a form issued by an immigration officer. It allows students to take up academic, professional or vocational training courses at an approved university, college or university.

Cost of student visa: Generally, the student visa is priced at CAN$125, students are advised to check thee current cost from the Canadian embassy.

Application Procedure For Study in Canada

General Overview

International students are expected to start planning for their studies in Canada 1 year in advance. All Canadian universities process applications from international students independent of one another. Additionally, deadlines vary from programme to programme and university to university.

In some cases, where a programme offers two start dates in an academic year, two deadlines will be offered i.e., October 15 for admissions to January and April 15 for September. Some universities will operate a rolling admissions process specifying a start date for the application process rather than a final deadline.

As with many other countries, popular Master’s programmes at the best Canadian universities tend to fill up much quicker than other universities and so early application is encouraged. Depending on whether a university or academic faculty operates a deadline forapplications or a rolling admissions process; decisions take up to 10 weeks to be made. Almost all universities charge a modest application fee and rarely waive this requirement.

Study Programs Offered in Canada

The major intake for Canada primarily is 'Fall' i.e. September. The other intake is in the month of 'winter' i.e. January, but it depends on the students program and the institution that he/she is applying to. Very few institutes might have the May intake as well.

There are several programs on offer by Canadian university. However, the management, engineering and medical courses are the most sought after.

For seeking admission to an undergraduate course, a minimum of twelve years of education is the required qualification. Students pursuing the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE) have an advantage as ISCE system is similar to the British System and its is easy to interpret for the US colleges. In case of CBSE and State Boards the student may have to communicate course contents, level of study etc., to the university.

Courses & Eligbility for Higher Study in Canada

 English language requirement: All students must be fluent in English if they are applying to Canadian Institutes. International students need to reach the required level of English language competence. All students should take up the IELTS or TOEFL exams. An IELTS band of 6.0/6.5 for Undergraduate & 6.5/7 for Postgraduate courses or a TOEFL score of 80 and above for Undergraduate and 90 and above for Post Graduate courses is desirable.
