Student Accommodation in Germany

Your first point of contact when looking for a flat or a room is the Student Services organization at youruniversity. Student Services operate their own halls of residence that offer value-for-money accommodation for students. 

They also maintain a file with the addresses of private landlords and landladies. They additionally offer a particularly interesting service for international students: Many Student Services sell Service Sets for foreign students. These sets can be booked via the Internet before you come to Germany.

Scholarships in Germany

There are numerous organizations in Germany that fund and promote research in the form of scholarships, fellowships and prizes. Study Expenditure in Germany

Though most of the German Universities do not charge tuition fees, one still needs money for generalliving expenses, boarding and lodging, insurance, books etc. A scholarship or grant may be the answer for those who don’t have the necessary financial resources. You are strongly advised to assess your own financial means early and realistically.

Prior to your visit to Germany, the German foreign missions must be convinced that you have sufficient financial means at your disposal to cover your cost of living for your whole study duration in Germany.

Language Requirements to Study in Germany

To study in Germany, you have to prove that you have a good command on the German language.The only exception to this rule is the international programs taught in English. The easiest way to learn the German language is, certainly, by being in Germany. 

You can attend one of the international summer courses available at universities in Germany. The courses are designed in such a manner that people of the same age group have a chance to learn German and a bit about the country. Participants often live with host families during the time they attend a summer course. 

That's a good way to learn about every day life in Germany. An alternative is renting a place at a student dormitory. The courses themselves cost anywhere from 300 to 650 Euro.

In many countries of the world, ‘Germany's Goethe Institutes’ offer language instruction at all levels. They also conduct preparatory courses for higher level examinations.

German is also an important language in its own right and is spoken by many people. So it's well worth learning - for example, by attending a summer language course. And, German is definitely not as difficult as popular opinion would have it. Universities and colleges generally require German language certificates, which you can easily gain by taking the appropriate test in your home country.

"Deutsche Welle" offers free language courses via the internet. The beginners course "German - Why not?" is available in more than 20 languages.

Student Visa for Germany

EU citizens and citizens from some other countries (Honduras, Island, Liechtenstein,Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the United States) do not need a visa. Everybody else must apply for a visa for study purposes via the German diplomatic representation in their home country. You must not under any circumstances travel to Germany on a tourist visa.

A national Visa is issued for stays lasting longer than three months (for example, to attend a preparatory course at a Studienkolleg or to study a full programme).

Entry Requirements for Study in Germany

Before you can be admitted to a course of study at a German institution of higher education you will asbe required to take the Assessment Test. This requirement will apply as a rule. Admission to the assessment test is only possible for applicants who can prove that they hold a secondary school leaving certificate awarded for 12 years of schooling. Applicants who provide proof of successful participation in the entrance examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology can be admitted direct to highereducation study.

Education System in Germany

The academic year

 

The academic year is divided into two semesters or terms. The summer semester usually runs from April 1 to September 30, the winter semester lasts from October 1 to March 31. The semester may begin or end one month earlier at some universities of applied science. About a third of the academic year consists of breaks, time away from the lecture halls. But these months can hardly be called vacation though; you'll need the time to write research papers, work on presentations and finish your homework. Some professors schedule examinations or tests during this time. You may also need the time to acquire work experience through internships.
